For this project we have to create a self-initiated motion graphic piece that explores significant and creative uses of typography. It provides the opportunity to use typography in an original and challenging context, producing design solutions where the outcome reflects a mature understanding of the potentials for creative design that motion type offers. The aim of this project is to deliver a message, information or narrative primarily through the use of typography.

Brief:

Proposal:

Outline / Concept:

My initial idea for this project was to create a motion video piece that takes the viewer on a journey inside a computer. I liked this idea as it gave me the freedom to rely heavily on typographic and illustrative components which would be used to explore the depths of code and visualise the different functions of the machine, as well as focusing heavily on my editing and art style. The typographic elements were going to be mainly focused on numbers, code and random characters which would be broken down to see what makes the design of typefaces so unique and also to emphasise the importance of typography.

I created an experimental audio soundtrack (see below) to complement the visuals and to help further explore the subject matter. This was going to be used for me to beat-match my visuals and to set the overall pace and tone of the video. I wanted the piece to have a futuristic feel and to give the audience an insight into the complexity of the digital age, I would capture this by using different editing techniques, including glitches, transitions, strobe effects and fast cuts, as well as creating various complementary visual elements in both 2D and 3D styles.

However...

I have since decided to proceed with my second idea of creating a motion / lyric video for the song "Que Sera" by Wax Tailor. The piece will be solely focused on the lyrics to the song so that I can create my own typographic response, but instead of creating a standard lyric video, I am aiming to create a motion piece that would be used as a projected background for the artist during a live performance / show. I am choosing to do this as it is something I am interested in and would like to do more of in the future, and having existing lyrics / text will make the piece more structured and add narrative. I chose this song because it has a pace / tempo that I believe compliments my editing style well and has various sound effects and elements that would be interesting and challenging to try and represent visually using different techniques.

The piece will have an experimental feel while also remaining coherent with the lyrics and meaning of the song. I will achieve this by using visual elements to emphasise the subject and ensuring that the typographic elements are accurate to the theme. I will also be creating various complimentary visual elements in both 2d and 3d styles as well as focusing heavily on my editing techniques.

Personal Reflection:

For this project we had to create a motion graphic piece focused around typography. I responded to this by creating a lyric video to the song Que Sera by Wax Tailor. I believe that my final outcome represents the song well, I relied heavily on typographic elements and my use of editing to ensure that the piece was coherent with the lyrics, meaning and feel of the song. I achieved this by making my visuals react to the music, for example, if a glitching effect was heard, I would edit the type so that it would appear to be glitching, and therefore represent the sounds visually.

Overall, I think my piece responds to the brief well and emphasises the lyrics of the song by combining motion and typography in various interesting ways. However, I feel it is quite minimal and repetitive in terms of style. Personally, I am unhappy with the outcome of this project and would have liked to challenge myself to create a piece that was more dynamic and technically advanced.
